- ➤ On July 23rd, the remains of Marine Lance Cpl. Michael J. Veneziale were buried at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery after Veterans Making a Difference arranged the service to honor this unclaimed veteran. He served in the Marine Corps as a cook (from March 2nd to Dec. 7th) and received flag honors from a fellow veteran. Reading Eagle

- ➤ Berks County detectives arrested Harley L. Haage — a 28-year-old from Amity Township — on Wednesday after investigators found she exchanged nude images and videos with a 16-year-old girl, and she now faces charges of unlawful contact with a minor, possession of child pornography, corruption of minors and criminal use of a communications facility. - ➤ Detective Petunia Santiago and indigenous superhero Amauta invite neighbors to a free community play called (HHH) on the steps of the Reading Public Library, where they should bring fingerprint dusting kits and magnifying glasses. The event will run on Saturday, July 26 at (3 p.m.) and uses dance and drama to explore a near-murder mystery around a mayoral debate. Berks Weekly

- ➤ Energy bills are set to rise as PJM Interconnection announced Tuesday that capacity prices hit a record high of $329.17 per megawatt-day—nearly 22 percent above the previous auction record. Governor Shapiro’s actions capped the price to prevent runaway costs and saved 13 million residents over $1.6 billion while customers may see a 1.5 to 5 percent increase in some bills next year. - ➤ Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County announced the winners of the 2025 Dorothy Klausing Bentley Scholarship—Tyler Ferenz from Douglassville, Giselle Feliciano from Womelsdorf and Luke Levan from Wernersville—each receiving a $500 award. - ➤ On Tuesday night, the Reading Planning Commission tabled a proposal from a limited partnership to combine three parcels including 743 Thorn St. — a 14-space lot site — to build a private parking lot for the Platinum Sports Bar in Centre Park Historic District. Residents and city officials raised concerns that the plan would change the district’s historic look and increase traffic while officials plan a site inspection and council review for parking rules. - ➤ Reading's new community development director is exploring long-term strategies — including land banking — to take control of the city's most deteriorated properties. Officials said overdue inspections contributed to missed red flags at 501 N. Eighth St. where part of a wall collapsed. Reading Eagle
