CRIME NEWS

  • Jose Pizarro was sentenced yesterday to life in prison — followed by 76 months to 15 years — for fatally shooting former NFL player Antonio Dennard in a Muhlenberg Township parking lot on October 16th, after fleeing to New York and being captured by U.S. Marshals.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State Berks professor Janelle Larson received the Global Lifetime Achievement Award for her work starting a global outreach program in Kenya and building a partnership with the Children and Youth Empowerment Centre+ her efforts have helped over 100 students learn ethical global work. The award marks her 17-year commitment to community development and improving care for vulnerable children.  Berks Weekly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Reading has been named a Tree City USA for the 40th year by the Arbor Day Foundation because the city's Shade Tree Commission and City Arborist Lester Kissinger Jr. keep more than 8,000 trees thriving and plant about 100 trees each year while treating pests and reducing maintenance costs.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Paul Friel is leading an effort to ban law enforcement from wearing masks in Pennsylvania unless for health needs or undercover work—he and six colleagues plan to introduce a bill requiring visible ID in uniforms to boost public trust.  Reading Eagle
  • Amity Township officials filed a formal complaint with state regulators—PA Public Utilities Commission—over frequent power outages in Berks County that residents said occur almost weekly and disrupt traffic signals along the SR 422 corridor. MetEd crews patrolled the lines on Monday but could not determine the cause, leaving residents without clear answers.  WFMZ-TV
  • Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania agreed to pay $790,000—$395,000 of which is restitution—to settle allegations that it violated Medicare rules by submitting duplicate claims for bilateral eye injections from Sept. 1, 2018 to April 7, 2025, officials announced.  Reading Eagle

  • Heritage of Green Hills in Cumru Township now offers a palliative care program—its COMPASS program—in partnership with Seniority Healthcare to help residents with two or more chronic conditions stay comfortable and manage their symptoms while continuing treatments.
