  • On Friday morning, Muhlenberg Township police led by Chief Randall Hoover met with residents at Diamond Credit Union in Temple during the Coffee with the Chief outreach event. The program, organized in partnership with the Highway Safety Network, offered doughnuts and beverages while promoting pedestrian and school bus safety.  Reading Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • Berks County officers are increasing DUI checkpoints & roving patrols this summer to catch drivers impaired by alcohol and drugs, and they will focus on evening hours and weekends despite fewer arrests during the Independence Day weekend.  Berks Weekly
  • A Reading man, 34-year-old Mikal Portalatin, pleaded guilty yesterday to federal charges for three armed robberies in Berks County (one incident involved him discharging his firearm during a chase) and he will be sentenced on October 30 with a maximum life sentence possible.  WFMZ-TV
  • Amity Township Police are seeking a suspect who robbed two convenience store customers at gunpoint at Royal Farms—1340 Benjamin Franklin Highway on July 6 at about 2:50 a.m.—while Crime Alert Berks is offering up to $10,000 for tips.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • A nonprofit from Philadelphia called PA Humanities will decorate Reading sidewalks with haiku written by local children through its Rain Poetry project — local artist Adrian Perez-Roman will also teach haiku at the northeast branch of Reading Library.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The County of Berks is facing an intermittent 9-1-1 outage as technical providers for PEMA investigate the issue — residents are advised to call 610-655-4911 as an alternative for emergencies and avoid using 9-1-1 to test the system. Continued updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.  Berks Weekly

HEALTH NEWS

  • Berks Community Health Center has received a Models of Care grant from the National Association of Community Health Centers — funded by Johnson & Johnson — to expand its self-management program for patients with uncontrolled diabetes. The program provides a free glucometer and mobile app for daily readings and supports patients with coordinated care from a Chronic Care Nurse and other specialists.  Berks Weekly
  • The Pennsylvania Department of Health told parents that SPPTTY kids bicycles sold online for about $85 from August to December have lead levels that are unsafe for children. Parents are told to stop using the bikes, email a photo of the dismantled parts to get a refund from Shenzhen Yihuachuang Technology, and have their children checked for lead poisoning—this helps keep kids safe.  Berks Weekly
