COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This weekend in southeastern Pennsylvania, Blobfest will run at Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville from Friday through Sunday with a street fair on Saturday and film screenings scheduled throughout. Other events include concerts by Steve Forbert in Bryn Mawr, Foghat in Glenside, shows in Upper Merion and Reading, a Cirque du Soleil performance at Wells Fargo Center, and Bulls, Bands and Barrels at Santander Arena — featuring bull riding and country music.  Reading Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • A Spring Township man—Eric J. Sloan, 52—was arrested after his rifle dropped and discharged accidentally, sending two bullets through the ground-floor ceiling into a second-floor apartment and waking sleeping tenants, and he now faces charges for discharging a firearm into an occupied structure and reckless endangerment.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading police arrested 25-year-old Victor Alicea-Velez for shooting a man on May 17 in the 1200 block of Cotton Street after issuing a June 16 warrant, and he is now held in Berks County Jail on $250,000 bail while awaiting a Tuesday night hearing.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Phoebe Stutzman of Berks County led a multicounty team to first place in the senior livestock judging division at Pennsylvania 4-H Animal Judging Day at Penn State's University Park campus. The event brought together 260 youth -ages 10 to 18- to test their skills in dairy, horse and livestock judging.  Berks Weekly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A local wildlife rehabilitation center rescued coyote pups that had a difficult start—officials are planning care and release options to give them the best chance at a healthy future.  WFMZ-TV
  • On June 24, 2025, Reading Police Officer Helene Alexander rescued a fledgling peregrine falcon on Penn Square after it suffered heat exhaustion and hit a building. The injured bird is cooling off in her cruiser—it will soon be moved to Red Creek Wildlife Center in Schuylkill County.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Reading Zoning Hearing Board considered a request from Reading School District to expand 12th and Marion Elementary with eight to 12 new classrooms and a standalone cafeteria at 1200 N. 12th St. — the board also reviewed a special exception for educational use on Pearl St. properties and variances for rowhouse projects, with decisions coming at the next hearing on Aug. 13.  WFMZ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michael Stern, president and CEO at Tower Health, and Natashia Szortyka, philanthropy coordinator at Quaker Maid Meats, joined the Reading Hospital Foundation Board of Directors on four-year terms to support hospital projects. Katherine Thornton—Foundation President—said their leadership and commitment will guide future work at the Foundation.  Berks Weekly
