  • Animal Rescue League of Berks County has launched an emergency campaign to raise $30,000 for a mobile X-ray machine—its current unit no longer passes inspection and limits treatment for injured animals. A generous donor will match the first $13,000 in donations, boosting the shelter's efforts to save more lives.  Berks Weekly

CRIME NEWS

  • Amity Township police are seeking help in identifying a suspect in a robbery at Speedway gas station on Ben Franklin Highway early Friday at 1:20 a.m.—the suspect, a heavy-built Black male with a beard and tattoos on his left arm and both hands, was seen running toward Route 422 and anyone with information is urged to call 610-655-4911.  Reading Eagle
  • South Heidelberg Township Police are investigating a hit-and-run after a tractor trailer struck a utility pole and overhead wires along Hill Road at 2:48 p.m. on July 1, causing significant damage as the vehicle fled toward Penn Avenue — residents with camera footage are urged to help identify it.  Berks Weekly

CULTURE NEWS

  • Churches in and around Berks County are hosting a range of special events this week, including a Picnic in the Grove at St. John’s (Hain’s) United Church of Christ next Saturday with the kitchen opening at 4 p.m. A flea market and bake sale will be held at Zion Spies E.R. Church next Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., while other churches offer outdoor worship, guest performances and community meals over the weekend.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sam Berryman, a Berks County native from Brandywine Heights High School and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, earned his second national gold medal in masonry at the SkillsUSA Championships in Atlanta from June 23 through June 27—he is the only Pennsylvanian and only the second student since 2004 to earn gold in both high school and post-secondary divisions.  Berks Weekly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Berks County and seven other counties returned to normal water status after DEP lifted drought watch declarations following the July 2 meeting of the Commonwealth Drought Task Force. DEP said residents should still conserve water—localized dry spots may continue to need extra care.  Berks Weekly

HEALTH NEWS

  • Haven Behavioral Hospital of Eastern Pennsylvania is teaming up with the I’m Fine. project to present an immersive art exhibit on mental health awareness at 2500 Bernville Road in Reading until July 15—local workshops led to the creation of ceramic masks that reveal how people hide their true emotions.  Berks Weekly
