- ➤ The Berks County Commission will host a ceremony at noon on July 8 in Reading with colonial reenactors and a reading of parts of the Declaration of Independence in German at the Berks County Services Center—part of a national 250th anniversary celebration. - ➤ Reading officials announced that the building at 435 Penn St. will be demolished because critical structural issues pose a public safety risk, following the recent demolition of nearby properties at 431 and 433 Penn St. City Managing Director Jack Gombach said the move will pave the way for future redevelopment and investment after a structural engineering review is completed — discussions with Philly Office Retail will conclude in early August. - ➤ Reading City Council has named Reading native David Barr as the new community development director, and he will begin his role today with a yearly salary of ($126,170). He spent many years in planning, code enforcement and construction planning with the U.S. Department of State and will work with Mayor Eddie Moran and the council to guide the city's revitalization efforts. - ➤ Pennsylvania’s state budget will be delayed for the fourth year as lawmakers remain divided over spending plans and a dispute over taxing skill games—differences over funding for schools, transit, and health programs may extend negotiations past the June 30 deadline.
