  • A beloved summer camp (open since 1948) in Berks County celebrated 77 years of offering fun and friendship to local children.  WFMZ-TV
  • Car enthusiasts in Berks County held an annual car show at Saint John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Birdsboro on Saturday—displaying over 200 vehicles—and raised funds for charity. Ten percent of the proceeds went to the Tunnels To Towers Foundation to honor a New York City firefighter who died on 9/11.  WFMZ-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a phone scam in Alsace Township after a 64-year-old Fleetwood man lost $2,000 on May 29 when a caller posing as a Berks County Sheriff’s Office official falsely claimed he had an arrest warrant for missed jury duty—officials warn that real law enforcement never demands payment by phone.  Berks Weekly

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ten West Reading All-Stars players and three coaches took a week-long cultural exchange trip to California where they visited historic sites—such as Fisherman’s Wharf and Oracle Park—and played seven basketball games while forming lasting bonds; one player was injured and needed 10 stitches, and another got food poisoning during the tour.  Reading Eagle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Berks County player won $150,000 with an online Powerball ticket by matching four white balls (4, 6, 9, 23, 59) and the red Powerball number 25 in the June 14 drawing. The player added a $1 Power Play option that tripled the base prize from $50,000, and lottery officials have not released the winner’s identity until the claim is validated.  Berks Weekly
  • Two Berks County food producers will share more than half a million dollars in federal funding as part of a program announced this week to modernize local food production. Clover Farms Dairy received a $500,000 infrastructure grant to expand refrigeration capacity—Keim Orchard was awarded $48,745 to install stainless steel machinery to improve fruit packing.  Berks Weekly

HEALTH NEWS

  • A heat wave has made pavement very hot in Reading and it can burn bare skin or pet paws in seconds (experts advise testing the surface with your hand) before walking on it. When air temperatures go above 85 degrees, asphalt may hit over 120 degrees (posing a risk of second-degree burns) so residents should be cautious.  Reading Eagle
  • Summer is here and the American Red Cross has urged families to learn water safety skills and take swim lessons to lower drowning risks among children; the agency stressed that all family members should closely watch children near water and use approved safety gear — its programs have helped reduce drowning accidents over the years.  Berks Weekly
