  • Many community events are set for the coming weeks. Daniel Boone Homestead in Exeter Township will mark Independence Day on July 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with guided tours and colonial crafts, while Gov Mifflin League Community Days run until July 5 at Gov Mifflin Intermediate School and a wellness celebration is planned on June 28 at Riverfront Park with art activities and free health screenings; PrintFest will be held on June 29 at GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, and additional events include grief support today at Exeter Community Library at 6 p.m., book and rummage sales, farmhouse tours near Virginville on July 13, cloister tours at Ephrata Cloister on July 12, a pet support meeting on July 7 at St John’s Reformed Church, and a church picnic on July 26 at Huff’s Union Church.  Reading Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • Early Sunday morning, police discovered a body on Oak Lane between parked cars and investigators say someone at a Lorraine Road party holds key information—tips from the community are crucial—to solve the case, urging anyone with details to contact Reading Police.  WFMZ-TV
  • Reading police caught 33-year-old Axel Caraballo-Morales—who had evaded capture for nearly three months after he fired shots at his girlfriend’s car near Alvernia University—and he now faces charges of attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault and weapons offenses while being held on $1 million bail.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Quinn Wagner, who is legally blind, graduated as valedictorian from Muhlenberg High School and will attend Cornell University this fall to study environmental engineering—she received a $10,000 scholarship from Lighthouse Guild to support her studies. Wagner said she wants to open doors in science for people with disabilities and girls by proving that hard work and creativity can overcome limits.  Reading Eagle

  • Kim Murphy, president of Berks Nature for 21 years, will retire at the end of December—she expanded the organization’s conservation and education programs with new summer camps and a preschool for local children.  Reading Eagle

  • Reading City Council approved a downtown Vision Zero action plan Monday night to reduce traffic-related fatalities — the plan sets a blueprint for improvements like bike lanes and parking adjustments and qualifies the city to apply for a federal grant if it meets a required match.  WFMZ-TV
