CULTURE NEWS

  • More than 300 people gathered last night at the DoubleTree Hotel in Reading for the state convention of the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World — one of the oldest African American fraternal organizations in the country as state Sen. Judy Schwank presented a Senate citation. The group will hold workshops, a community cookout, a Juneteenth parade and a Great Gatsby Ball on Saturday.  WFMZ-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Gardener Pam Baxter picked two plants from a local garden center, Angelonia and Lemon Gem marigold, that support bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. She said the plants thrive in full sun and help maintain the local ecosystem as land is cleared for new buildings.  Reading Eagle
  • Five American white pelicans took temporary residence at Lake Ontelaunee on June 10—only the second record of the species in Berks County, and birders can view them from the Route 73 dam breast.  Reading Eagle

  • The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission said recent rain has made state waterways run higher and faster. They warned boaters to wear life jackets and check conditions—especially in rivers with hidden debris—before heading out.  WFMZ-TV
