ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • State Rep Mark Gillen honored five first responders on Wednesday in Robeson Township for their bravery during an April 28 house fire on White Bear Road that killed three people and injured firefighters, awarding citations to Lt. Christian Sixtos-Flores, Barry Readinger, Deputy Chief Brian Rhein, Cpl. Jeb Cooper, and Chief Scott Gullo – they risked their lives to pull victims from the blaze and perform CPR despite heavy smoke and heat.  Reading Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • Gavin Mata, owner of the Bally-based personal care agency, pleaded guilty to Medicaid fraud and perjury and was sentenced by Judge Thomas Parisi to one month in jail (22 months of parole and five years of probation) and must pay $235,778 in restitution after his scheme falsely billed Medicaid for services not rendered.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nine Berks County housing programs received a total of $2.1 million from Pennsylvania to support affordable housing initiatives — recipients include Opportunity House, which will convert the Eckert House into 15 units, and local groups aiding eviction prevention — the funds come from natural gas impact fees and a realty transfer tax.  Reading Eagle
