CRIME NEWS

  • A 19-year-old Northampton man, Damien S. Love of Penn Argyl, crashed his motorcycle into an SUV in downtown Reading after fleeing police & received emergency surgery at Reading Hospital before being charged and released on $25,000 bail.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Reading Science Center received a $2,500 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support its monthly Science Storytime program at 645 Penn St.—the grant will also expand sessions to include a traveling version that visits local libraries this fall.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials, school board members and community leaders gathered at Reading City Hall on Friday to honor school crossing guards for their role in keeping students safe. The ceremony awarded certificates and served coffee and pastries — veteran guard Maria Cruz, who has worked for 40 years, was among those celebrated.  Reading Eagle
  • The Pennsylvania Turnpike started removing tollbooths east of Reading at the Pocono interchange and will remove the Valley Forge tollbooth this summer—tollbooths at Morgantown and Downingtown are scheduled for next year.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Reading Fightin Phils are in Baseballtown for two weeks and will start their home stretch by promoting mental health awareness — the team is giving away retro jersey t-shirts with the ruOK? Berks logo as part of a county mental health department partnership that directs fans to crisis support and services.  WFMZ-TV
