ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A tractor trailer overturned on Route 422 eastbound near Church Lane in Douglass Township on June 4th before 3 p.m. and closed both lanes — emergency responders redirected traffic and no one was injured. Reading Eagle
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Overnight vehicle break-ins occurred in Mohnton Borough as police released surveillance footage to help identify a suspect wearing an arm immobilizer—possibly due to a recent injury—and urged residents to secure their vehicles and avoid leaving valuables inside. Berks Weekly
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Tec Centro Berks, operated by the Berks Latino Workforce Development Corp, celebrated the graduation of 128 students from career training programs such as CNA, medical records and billing, CDL & general construction pre-apprenticeship, culinary arts and HiSET during a ceremony held on May 23 in Reading. More than 250 people, including U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan and Reading Mayor Eddie Moran, attended while Visions Federal Credit Union donated $5,500 to help cover certification exam costs & remove financial barriers. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Emmanuel Bruno overcame a language barrier and other hurdles to graduate from the Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences—fulfilling his dream to become a nurse. He now practices taking blood pressure as he builds his new career. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Alvernia University received a PDE grant to expand its Accelerated Special Educator Certification Program that lets working professionals earn PK-12 certification in 18 months through summer field experiences and year-round mentoring. In the past year, more than 60 educators enrolled and about 30 more are expected with each seven‐week academic module—strengthening special education across local school districts. - ➤ The John Paul II Center for Special Learning celebrated three Reading graduates at a ceremony on Monday, June 2 at its Welsh Road campus in Shillington. A Mass was led by Monsignor Orsulak from St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church and diplomas were presented by Principal Kaylee Simick (Alexandra Castillo of Roselia Castillo, Amelia Carrillo of Alfa Quintana, and Nathaniel Thomas of Carmen Mantilla) before a reception for family and friends followed. - ➤ The Department of Aging changed its scoring system for county aging agencies by dropping weighted grades and treating all issues equally — critics fear this change will hide serious problems in abuse and neglect investigations.
