COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Penn State Berks residence life donated leftover items from student move-outs to Opportunity House (an emergency shelter) to reduce waste and help local residents rebuild their lives.  Berks Weekly

CULTURE NEWS

  • Christ Episcopal Church held a 200th anniversary celebration on May 9 at its historic location at the northwest corner of Fifth and Court streets. The event featured live music, guided tours and the unveiling of a time capsule (sealed in 1863) containing coins, newspapers and other relics.  Reading Eagle
  • The IMAX in Reading celebrated a ribbon cutting on Thursday, May 28 with upgrades featuring a 70 ft wide screen, immersive sound, and heated recliners. Future improvements will upgrade other auditoriums during summer and fall — a move designed to meet public demand.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Reading School Board approved a proposed $516.7 million budget that includes the district’s first real estate tax increase in nearly a decade (a 4% tax hike is proposed to raise the millage rate), and officials said revisions may still be made before the final adoption on June 30.  Reading Eagle
  • Williams Valley High School held its graduation ceremony today as the 2026 seniors celebrated their achievements. Many graduates plan to attend college, enlist in the military, or join the workforce — a milestone that marks diverse future paths for local students.  Reading Eagle
  • Nativity BVM High School celebrated its 2026 graduates who are preparing for diverse futures, from union work and cosmetology to business studies, physical therapy, electrical apprenticeships and mathematics. Graduates including Evan Ritter, Madeline Michael, Chloe Covell, Lily Baron, Peyton Emerich and Trey Keating look forward to new beginnings.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT announced that construction work will begin Tuesday on Route 61 between Blue Mountain Drive and Lowland Road in Tilden Township, which will cause single-lane conditions on northbound and southbound traffic until Oct. 30.  Reading Eagle
  • Moselem Springs Bridge in Richmond Township closed on Thursday after a routine inspection found its steel support beams were rapidly deteriorating—officials have installed barricades and say detour routes will be posted soon while design work to replace the bridge continues for next spring.  Reading Eagle

Berks County will share detour routes soon, and the nearby golf club said access remains unaffected though its driving range parking is restricted.  WFMZ-TV

  • Fans arrived early today at FirstEnergy Stadium to watch Phillies top prospect Gage Wood make his home debut. Free Hersheypark ticket giveaways drew children and longtime fans as they celebrated cherished local baseball traditions.  WFMZ-TV
