- ➤ On Wednesday, the Daniel Torres Hispanic Center held a World Hunger Day event that served a free meal of rice, chicken, and vegetables, provided fresh produce vouchers from The Food Trust, and offered nutrition lessons from local partners. Michael Toledo — the center’s CEO — said the center now supplies over 3,000 meals a day and works with local organizations to improve access to healthy food. Reading Eagle

- ➤ Authorities warn that phone scammers impersonating deputy sheriffs pressure local residents to pay bitcoin to avoid arrest for missed court appearances — officials advise hanging up immediately and reporting the call. Reading Eagle
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Bernardine Franciscan Sisters received a $10,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support their adult literacy center at 449 S. Sixth St. in Reading — the funds will be used to purchase new instructional materials, renew software licenses and provide specialized teacher training over the next year. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Reading Science Center received a $175,500 PA tax credit through the Neighborhood Assistance Tax Credit to double its space for after-school programs—education program director Sarah Troy welcomed over 30 students in the Sisters in STEM program as expansion plans move forward. Reading Eagle

- ➤ Mayor Eddie Moran held a ribbon cutting on Tuesday morning to reopen the redesigned splash pad at Barbey Playground at 200 Schuylkill Ave. The upgrade, done by Empire Services with Community Development Block and city capital improvement funds, features a flow-through design — allowing a larger play area — and brings the total water playgrounds in the city to seven.
