CULTURE NEWS

  • The Reading Public Museum will showcase works by Puerto Rico-born artist Patrick McGrath Muniz from May 31 through Aug. 24 — his painting The Ship of the Believers is featured among the new additions to the museum’s collection.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Faith Bentz was one of 12 students who graduated from Alvernia University’s new engineering program on May 27th—marking an important milestone for the school.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading School District received $51M in federal funds after a court order reversed a decision to cut off money for its new RHS Innovation Academy project — the ESSER funds will pay for building and HVAC fixes so the project stays on track. District leaders said the win will help reduce crowding at Reading High School and let them finish the new school on time.  Berks Weekly
  • Reading Science Center announced it has been awarded a $175,500 Neighborhood Assistance Program Tax Credit from Governor Shapiro’s administration to expand its facility at 645 Penn Street—this upgrade will double exhibit space and add a classroom and lunch area. The expansion will let the center host full-day field trips and serve more students from Berks County—plans that respond to growing demand for STEM education.  Berks Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Reading Mayor Eddie Morán reopened Barbey’s Playground splash pad after a decade of closure, investing over $243,000 by using $150,000 from community development block funds & $93,000 from the City Capital Improvement Fund to add low-to-the-ground spray features, a flow-through water system and a durable design. The splash pad is Reading’s seventh city splash pad and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Labor Day.  WFMZ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kyle Schies walked a full mile at the Reading Public Museum on May 15 to thank the Reading Hospital team who helped him recover after a severe motorcycle accident in Tulpehocken Township. He credited his strong will and their care — a sign of his progress in overcoming coma and paralysis — and now he hopes to open a gym.  Reading Eagle
