  • Local nonprofit Barrio Alegria led volunteer cleanups at Reading Rising Park and Baer Park last week. The group worked with neighbors and a city Public Works Department crew to make the parks more welcoming — a move aimed at sparking neighborhood pride.  Reading Eagle
  • Mary Pohl remembers her veteran husband Rufus, who died in 2021 at age 74 from illnesses linked to his Agent Orange exposure during the Vietnam War—he suffered from heart problems and Parkinson’s disease over many years. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Exeter School District was awarded $344,051 from the state's Solar for Schools Grant Program+ state Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz said the funds will support green improvements like buying and installing solar energy systems to help lower energy and property costs.  Reading Eagle
  • Nisha Mele, a teen from Berks (locally known for community involvement), earned the Girl Scouts Gold Award yesterday for her project that taught children about elephant conservation.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Emergency demolition of two structurally compromised Reading-owned buildings on Penn Street was nearly finished Friday after work began May 15 because the buildings posed a public safety risk. Only the façade of the 1912 historic building at 431 Penn was saved while 433 Penn was fully demolished.  Reading Eagle
