  • Excavation began Thursday at a new retreat center near Shillington built by the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood to include a 24-room retreat house, chapel, community room and kitchen facing a pond; construction crews plan to finish in about one year.  WFMZ-TV
  • Students, staff and parents at 10th and Penn School joined the Public Works Department last week in City Park for their fourth annual cleanup, coordinated by teacher Betsy Lutchkus Roxburgh and Clean City coordinator Ryan Bradley.  Reading Eagle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Berks LaunchBox announced that five local entrepreneurs received $2,000 IMAGINE Your Business grants from Berks County’s Imagine Berks Fund (supporting equipment and marketing) to boost start-ups in youth sports, healthcare, kickboxing therapy, cleanup services and handcrafted jewelry. The grants will help these ventures grow their ideas.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Reading Community Players will perform Mary Chase’s classic comedy ‘Harvey’ at the WCR Center for the Arts from June 5 to 7, a family-friendly show that blends fun with heart (inviting audiences to enjoy a tale of kindness and wit).  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fleetwood Area High School named Teagan Hilburt and Miles Schroeder as May Students of the Month. The school honored them for their work in clubs and sports, with Teagan set to study business management and Miles planning to study nursing.  Reading Eagle
  • On Wednesday, May 20, the Berks County Community Foundation Scholarship Luncheon honored over 100 students with $800,950 in awards at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Reading, and Kutztown University President Philip Cavalier urged attendees to be present while recognizing winners in several academic fields.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Boating safety officials held a press conference at Blue Marsh Lake’s Bern Township boat ramp on May 15 to urge boaters to wear Coast Guard-approved life jackets and follow all boating rules ahead of Memorial Day weekend, offering free vessel checks and safety classes.  Reading Eagle
  • The Animal Rescue League of Berks County held a low-cost mobile pet clinic Thursday at the Berks Community Health Center at Oakbrook where pet owners could update vaccines and microchip their animals + the nonprofit will host another clinic at the Penn Street location in June.  WFMZ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Trinity beat Berks Catholic 12-6 in the District 3 Class 3A baseball semifinals on Thursday, May 21. They will face the winner of today's game between Kutztown and Bermudian Springs — the championship is scheduled for Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Penn Medicine Field in Lancaster.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading is set to host a World Cup Fan Zone with block parties and watch parties on Penn Street in three weeks for soccer fans. The event, organized by local business leaders and supported by a grant from Representative Cepeda-Freytiz, will take place rain or shine.  WFMZ-TV
