COMMUNITY NEWS

  • West Reading Farmers Market is a long-standing community tradition held each Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Penn and South Sixth Avenues; vendors offer seasonal produce, baked goods, and handmade items as live music fills the air and neighbors reconnect.  Reading Eagle
  • Christ Church Reading celebrated its 200th anniversary on May 9 with a time capsule opening that uncovered Civil War-era artifacts (coins and local newspapers) and unveiled its restored nave and sanctuary. The church will host a block party on July 18 with food trucks, children’s activities and live music.  Berks Weekly
  • Horticulturist Rudy Keller held the Spring Native Plant Sale at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary on May 16 and 17 — the event sold out halfway through the first day and drew local visitors eager to buy milkweed and Cardinal flower.  Reading Eagle

  • D&S Elite Construction has named Allen Butler president as founder Joseph Delibertis shifts to CEO (focusing on long-term strategy). The leadership change is effective immediately to support the company’s growth in Eastern Pennsylvania.  Berks Weekly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Reading officials broke ground on a solar energy project at the public works campus and Cedar Street parking lot near City Hall, installing 4,255 panels that will cut electricity costs to zero by 2027. The project, in partnership with Schneider Electric & local teams, is expected to save $13.5 million over 20 years.  Reading Eagle

  • The City of Reading launched a pilot grant program to support workforce housing conversion downtown. Owners of eligible properties on Penn Street may receive grants ($25,000 to $100,000) if they apply by July 3.  Berks Weekly

HEALTH NEWS

  • Robert Diaz, founder of Walk It Out Recovery Services, used his challenging childhood as a strength to help others overcome addiction. He started bilingual family programs and Wildflowers (a children’s support group) in Berks County and uses music to share hope for those facing substance abuse.  Berks Weekly

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gavin Geiger from Brandywine Heights was named BCIAA boys volleyball player of the year Tuesday after his team won a five-set victory over Exeter on May 14 (Coach Brooke Robertson was honored as coach of the year).  Reading Eagle
  • On Monday, Fleetwood defeated Hamburg 9-5 in a District 3 Class 4A softball quarterfinal as Biehl and Guldner each drove in two runs and will face Kennard-Dale at 4:30 p.m. Thursday — local teams advanced in other matchups.  Reading Eagle
  • Fifth-seeded Daniel Boone defeated Eastern York in straight sets Tuesday night in the District 3 Class 2A tournament and will face the winner of the Manheim Central + New Covenant Christian match on Thursday. No. 6 Schuylkill Valley advanced with a three-set win over Kutztown to reach the semifinals Thursday.  Reading Eagle
  • Twin Valley swept top BCIAA lacrosse awards for the 2026 season as coaches named senior Ellie Kaplan and senior Drew Engle players of the year on Tuesday; Twin Valley won the girls title while Wilson captured the boys championship.  Reading Eagle
  • At District 3 baseball quarterfinals, Kutztown beat Wyomissing 6-1 on Monday and advanced to face Bermudian Springs at 4:30 p.m. Thursday — Berks Catholic defeated Pequea Valley 5-3 on Monday and will meet Trinity at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.  Reading Eagle
