COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Reading community events feature a World Hunger Day observance with free lunch, take-home meal boxes, and healthy eating activities at Casa Senior Center on May 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a memorial event for armed forces at Henry P. Robeson Park on May 22 with guest speaker State Sen. Chris Gebhard. Additional events include a comic performance by Alan Massenburg at the Manor on May 30, a food truck event on May 29, movie nights starting May 30, a BBQ fundraiser on June 1, a yard sale and an arts tour on June 7, and a golf tournament on June 21 — all offering local residents varied ways to join in community gatherings.  Reading Eagle
  • This Memorial Day, many parades and ceremonies are scheduled across Berks County to honor servicemembers who died in service. Residents in Robesonia, Wyomissing, Oley, Fleetwood, Mohnton, Exeter Township, Boyertown, Shillington, Reading, Muhlenberg Township, Kutztown and Wernersville will participate in events with speeches and community activities from May 22 — May 26.  Reading Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • Reading police have issued a community alert today about Orbeez-style gel blasters painted to resemble real guns being seen in city parks and public areas (reminding residents that such devices are banned by local ordinance) as they closely monitor the situation and urge anyone to report suspicious activity.  Berks Weekly

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Reading Public Museum will open Toytopia, an interactive exhibition of classic toys and games, on June 14 and run it until September 7. Museum members may preview the exhibit on June 14 from 9 to 11 a.m.—a special early access event for them.  Berks Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Treasury holds more than $68.7 million in unclaimed property with $16.1 million already returned to Berks Countians over the past four years—state officials will notify over 40,000 people through the Pennsylvania Money Match program to claim their funds.  Reading Eagle
  • Demolition of the former East Reading Pool is set to begin this week as the city prepares a new splash pad and parking area for East Reading residents. Temporary parking restrictions will run on the pool side of South 14½ Street on weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and work is expected to continue until about July 4.  Berks Weekly

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tower Health said that Reading Hospital retail pharmacies now offer free medication home delivery and help with prescription transfers after Rite Aid closed some stores. Four local pharmacy locations serve residents and a new one in Limerick will open soon — the home delivery service doubled since January and has earned over 2,100 positive reviews.  Reading Eagle
  • A study found Berks County emergency medical services struggled with insufficient funding, inadequate insurance reimbursement, paramedic shortages and aging equipment that troubled many of the 18 nonprofit ambulance providers— raising concerns about local EMS readiness.  Reading Eagle
