  • Jack’s Pub at 1500 N. 10th St. in Reading is marking its 100th anniversary today with a community block party from noon to 6 p.m. — the family-owned bar will serve a chicken barbecue, offer corn hole and a Model T tour if the weather is good, and sell commemorative T-shirts while Amity Street is closed between 10th and Clover.  Reading Eagle
  • Gov. Mifflin senior Garrett Hyneman was named the winner of the 2025 Berks’ Best Taylor Seitzinger Community Service and Leadership Award—earning praise for his work on neighborhood and school tree planting projects. He will attend Lehigh University this fall to study mechanical engineering with a focus on green energy while planning more local projects.  Reading Eagle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Developers for a planned industrial park in southern Berks have been awarded a $2.3 million PA SITES grant to fund utility and infrastructure work for the first phase—a 900,000-square-foot facility in New Morgan. The project will add 450 jobs initially and could eventually create 2,750 jobs as it expands to 5.5 million square feet across about 1,200 acres near Route 10.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thirty-seven finalists in 11 categories for the 2025 Berks’ Best awards were announced on May 16th — the list features high school students from Reading and nearby areas competing in fields from Business to World Languages.  Reading Eagle
  • Rachel Sebastian, a librarian at Brecknock Elementary School in Gov. Mifflin, was named one of 12 finalists for the Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year Award by the state Department of Education on Friday — the award winner will be announced in fall and will represent Pennsylvania in the National Teacher of the Year competition.  Reading Eagle
  • Gianna Johnson, a senior at Exeter High, won the 2025 Berks’ Best award for world languages after a Girl Scout cookie sparked her love for learning new languages—she is one of the few who speaks four or more languages and mentors peers while working in her school’s French Club and Model Senate programs. She plans to study international relations in college to become an international lawyer.  Reading Eagle
  • Pearl Caldwell, a senior from Wyomissing, was named the 2025 Berks’ Best social studies winner. She learned to love history from her father and her teachers and will attend Boston College to study teaching and history—she also participates in school clubs and works as a lifeguard.  Reading Eagle

  • The Wyomissing Fire Department is asking for people to apply for an Entry Level Firefighter/EMT job to help the community. Applicants can download the form online and submit it in person or by mail at Wyomissing Borough Hall House (22 Reading Boulevard, Wyomissing) by Monday, June 16th at 3:00 p.m.  Berks Weekly
