  • The Power of the Purse Fund from Berks County Community Foundation awarded $70,899 in grants to seven groups that help local women and girls overcome poverty barriers and expand job or education opportunities. Chiara Renninger said the funds supported programs for training, healthy food access, and safe spaces to build skills.  Berks Weekly
  • The City of Reading will host Dumpster Day on Saturday, May 17 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at 11 drop-off sites for residents to dispose of bulky items—items such as tires, used oil, household chemicals, paint, televisions, and appliances will not be accepted.  Berks Weekly

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • State Police are investigating a fatal crash on Skyline Drive — near Bingaman Road in Alsace Township — that occurred around 6 p.m. today, and one person was taken to the hospital and later declared dead.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Manuel Torres-Columbo and his daughter, Victoriana Torres, earned their degrees with honors from Reading Area Community College on May 9—he got a diploma in data analysis while she received one in psychology and both plan to study more.  Reading Eagle
  • This summer, Penn State Berks will run STEM camps that let youth explore robotics, coding and science experiments. The camps, led by expert instructors, will use hands-on activities — to build teamwork and spark problem-solving skills — as they offer a fun and safe learning experience.  Reading Eagle

  • Commissioner Chair Christian Y. Leinbach urged county employees and citizens to wear green today for Berks County Mental Health Awareness Day during National Mental Health Awareness Month+commissioners also named Daniel Roe as assistant director of parks and recreation starting June 4 at an annual salary of $80,000+the appointment replaces Brendan Lederer following his promotion to director of parks and recreation earlier this year.  WFMZ-TV
