COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A memorial was dedicated Saturday, May 9 at Friedens Cemetery in Oley to honor Lt. Col. Ralph H. Angstadt (MIA in Vietnam) as family, local veterans, and community leaders gathered to remember his service and legacy.  Reading Eagle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Melanie Serrano became chief financial officer at the Berks County Intermediate Unit on May 4 after serving in its business services office; Jonestown Bank & Trust Co. promoted Kody Sitch to vice president, consumer lending officer and Lori Moyer to assistant vice president, mortgage operations manager.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from Berks County and nearby communities celebrated graduation and received academic and artistic awards on May 10 at Central Penn, East Stroudsburg, Alvernia, Lebanon Valley, and Scranton events (including leadership awards, honor society inductions, and art exhibits).  Reading Eagle
  • Alvernia University celebrated a record 800 graduates on Saturday at Santander Arena in Reading (the ceremony featured speeches by Customers Bank Executive Chairman Jay Sidhu and President Glynis Fitzgerald and included the first PA Studies graduates).  WFMZ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Long Lane at Route 222 in Maxatawny Township will be closed for more than two months starting May 18 for intersection reconstruction, according to PennDOT. Through traffic must follow a detour via Topton Road and Route 222 with limited access Monday and Tuesday nights until work ends July 31.  Reading Eagle
  • PennDOT is upgrading roads in Berks with an extended bridge replacement that closes Route 724 and 568 to Annon Street in Robeson Township until October, while repairs on Route 12 in Reading and pothole patching on multiple roads in Albany and Bern Townships occur from Monday to Friday.  Reading Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Conrad Weiser’s doubles team of Owen Hunt and John Tharp won the Class 2A title on Saturday in Hershey. They earned a spot at the PIAA Championships on May 23-24 at the Hershey Racquet Club and aim to advance further in state play.  Reading Eagle
  • Special Olympics Pennsylvania’s Eastern Spring Sectional brought 850 athletes, 350 coaches, and over 500 volunteers to Kutztown University on Saturday, May 9 for basketball, track, tennis, and swimming events. The athletes will advance to the Summer Games at Penn State University on June 6, 7 and 8.  Reading Eagle
