COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, the Rolling Remembrance Relay stopped at Papa John's on N. 5th Street in Reading to honor fallen soldiers and raise scholarship funds for children of military families. The 14,000-mile relay supports college and trade school opportunities for these children.  WFMZ-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters from Berks and Schuylkill counties rushed to an Amazon warehouse at the 3500 block (Mountain Road) in Upper Bern Township around 9 a.m. Friday morning after a structure fire forced workers to evacuate; the cause remains under investigation.  WFMZ-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • SVP Funds signed a definitive agreement on May 8 to acquire full interests in Birdsboro Power, a 485 MW natural gas plant in Birdsboro that it has managed since May 2025 by buying out partners (Sojitz Birdsboro LLC and Tokyo Gas America Ltd.).  WFMZ-TV
  • Berks LaunchBox powered by Penn State awarded up to $2,000 grants to five local startups today to support prototyping, marketing, and product development. Applications for the next IMAGINE Your Business grant are open until Friday, May 15 to further aid early-stage entrepreneurs in the community.  Berks Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bee-Inspiring Foundation donated 580 birdhouses to Whitfield Elementary School during Earth Day celebrations so that students could learn the importance of pollinators. The event featured an interactive assembly on bees, butterflies, and birds, allowing students to build and decorate habitats that support local wildlife.  Berks Weekly
  • The Exeter School District hosted its annual Exeter Games on Friday at Don Thomas Stadium for 83 special needs students from kindergarten through 12th grade. They competed in races, relays, wheelchair events, hurdles, discus, javelin, badminton + volleyball.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Berks County Jail held a ceremony on Friday, May 8 to honor correctional officers and employees during National Correctional Officers and Employees Week. Warden Jeffrey Smith presented awards and led a memorial service for fallen staff.  Reading Eagle
  • Chief Wayne Holben was sworn in on March 9 as head of the Northern Berks Regional Police Department. He brings 25 years of policing experience and is set on strengthening community trust — a key focus in his new role.  Berks Weekly

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alexander Reali of Berks Catholic won the boys shot put at the BCIAA Championships on Thursday at Gov. Mifflin with a decisive 53-1¼ throw that edged out Michael Glover + Jack Heckman. The meet concludes today with additional finals.  Reading Eagle
  • Wilson and Muhlenberg advanced from Friday’s BCIAA semifinals at Owls Field—Wilson won 1–0 against Exeter and Muhlenberg beat Daniel Boone—in tight pitching duels. The winners will face each other in the county championship game on Monday at 6:05 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium.  Reading Eagle
