COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Drivers and water customers in Reading experienced low or no water pressure after a water main break on Monday in the 700 block of Lancaster Avenue, leading to a wet commute and issues with water service at home. Crews spent two hours shutting off the flow & repairs on the 16-inch main continued until Monday evening while affected customers remain under a three-day boil water advisory.  WFMZ-TV
  • Schuylkill River Greenways announced plans to create the Thun Trail Garden near the new South Front Street trail to honor local philanthropist David Thun—who helped shape the region's greenways. The garden will have native plantings, benches, a bike fix-it station and a plaque while work on the connected trail section will be completed in 18 months.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading will host a festival on May 10 at 535 Canal St that honors moms and Cinco de Mayo with authentic Mexican food, live music, free gifts, and a performance by Grupo Uarhani. Other events this week include free car-seat checks by state police, park tours, library book sales, a bike ride, and more—giving local families a wide range of activities to enjoy.  Reading Eagle

  • Aladdin Restaurant in West Reading now serves fresh Mediterranean meals in a homey, friendly setting nearly three years after brothers Sam and George Sammak renovated it. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tec Centro Berks unveiled renovated training spaces at its repurposed parochial school on April 28—these updates include a commercial kitchen and labs for pre-apprentice, plumbing, and culinary arts programs that will support hundreds of students each year. Community leaders and state representatives praised the center as a key step for bilingual workforce training in Reading.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency has opened applications for its 2026 Kathy A. Possinger Housing Policy Fellowship, offering $12,000 in total funding for up to 12 months of research on a housing or community development topic—two fellows from academia and outside are eligible. The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, August 1, and all legal residents over 18 may apply.  WFMZ-TV
  • Reading voters will choose candidates for three City Council district seats (Districts 1, 4 and 5) in the May 20 primary election, with winners advancing to the November general election. Elected councilors will serve four-year terms and are paid $6,250 annually while addressing key issues from business growth to public safety.  Reading Eagle
