COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 78th annual Berks County Armed Forces Day Parade will take place on May 16 at 10 a.m. starting on the 800 block of Penn Avenue in Wyomissing and will travel into West Reading (rain or shine), honoring all military branches and marking the nation’s 250th anniversary of freedom.  Reading Eagle

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • PennDOT reported 1,047 traffic deaths in 2025 — a record low — and 109,515 crashes statewide, with Berks County fatalities dropping to 38, as officials noted improvements in impaired driving, lane departures and seat belt use.  Reading Eagle

  • Jersey Mike’s Subs will open its third local location tomorrow in Exeter Township at Exeter Commons Shopping Center with a ribbon cutting and fundraiser for the Exeter Community Education Foundation. Coupons distributed Monday and Tuesday will let customers donate $1 with each sub purchase.  Reading Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • Vandalism struck the Hillside Playground area last week, damaging items from the annual Christmas on the Mountain display and forcing city officials to pause a planned renovation that would add a splash pad and other enhancements while police investigate and offer a cash reward for tips.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Decision Day event last week honored graduates from Berks Career and Technology Center and Reading-Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center at Reading Area Community College’s Miller Center for the Arts, recognizing their plans for college, military service or employment.  Reading Eagle
  • The Reading School District held its Fourth Annual Countywide Mental Health Conference at the DoubleTree on Monday, where students in grades seven to 12 shared their experiences via arts and crafts and journaling; officials stressed that mental health is as important as academics.  WFMZ-TV
  • The Reading District Libraries' Dignity, Opportunity, and Respect Committee invites locals to a Holocaust Memorial Program on May 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Exeter Community Library (4569 Prestwick Drive, Exeter Township); presenter Jeff Gernsheimer will share his mother's rescue story from Nazi Germany for adults and families 10 and up.  Reading Eagle

  • Urban Engineers and PennDOT's District 5-0 received two CMAA Mid-Atlantic awards for the I-78/SR 61 project in Berks County (a $134.5M effort) that upgraded bridges and reopened SR 61 ahead of schedule, boosting safety and mobility along the corridor.  Berks Weekly
  • Last week, a fire intentionally set at the former Hillside pool delayed plans for a splash park as officials review the pool house at 339 N. 14th St and halt bidding on the nearly $4M project, risking $2M of ARPA funds.  Reading Eagle

  • During Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, Reading Standard Motorsports owner Mike Miller (Exeter Township) advises bikers to check their helmets, gloves, boots, and tires before riding. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developer Alan Shuman is redeveloping a stretch of Fifth and Penn streets by restoring the Farmers National Bank building for retail use — demolishing unsafe structures and adding a five-story infill building in future phases.
