COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Berks Lodge #71 held its annual memorial service on Friday, May 1 at the Berks County Heritage Center in Bern Township to honor local officers who died in service (names were read aloud and a 21-gun salute was performed) and the event united family, friends and community members.  Reading Eagle
  • Family Promise of Berks County received $20,000 from Lancaster County-based Clayton Homes yesterday to help prevent homelessness for local families. The funding supports the 'A Future Begins at Home' initiative that has aided more than 43,000 families since 2019.  Reading Eagle
  • Berks County Parks and Recreation is launching a free Backpack Lending Program that provides supplies and lesson materials for children (K-5) at several parks. Residents can reserve a backpack by emailing the department for details.  Reading Eagle

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A house on Claire Drive in Exeter Township burned, leaving heavy damage after the family's home loss; a friend said Daniel Oister, a resident who died this week at age 80 from health issues not caused by the fire, has left the family seeking support with a GoFundMe.  WFMZ-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lounge Around Games Co.—opened January 4 at the Berkshire Mall in Wyomissing—offers gamers over 1000 video games and hosts community events, but Jonathan Mashburn said uncertainties over mall redevelopment may curb its growing youth engagement.  Berks Weekly

CULTURE NEWS

  • Christ Episcopal Church at 435 Court St. will celebrate its 200th anniversary next Saturday from 2-5 p.m. with a live exhumation of a time capsule, the unveiling of its restored nave and sanctuary, and performances by the Berks Youth Chorus; Reading Mayor Eddie Moran and Bishop Gutierrez will attend.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ten local students earned associate’s degrees from RACC’s dual enrollment program before graduating high school, gaining college credits early and saving money. The program — charging $99 per credit — serves 17 public high schools and will expand with a $1 million grant this year.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Parts of Route 724 and Old River Road Bridge in Robeson Township were closed as PennDOT replaced the 1956 steel bridge over Allegheny Creek; police closed the detour bridge on April 30 (due to safety concerns) and marked detours remain until work finishes in October.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • SightMD Pennsylvania welcomes board-certified ophthalmologist A'sha M. Brown — specializing in medical retina and uveitis — to its Wyomissing and Pottsville offices. Dr. Brown, who completed her training at Drexel and Emory, is accepting new patients and expanding advanced eye care in the area.  WFMZ-TV
