- ➤ Habitat for Humanity of Berks County’s Birdhouse Challenge raised more than $50,000 from its live auction held Tuesday at the DoubleTree Hotel in Reading; the event sold over 250 tickets and featured 25 handcrafted birdhouses—including an $4,000 Swiss chalet-style piece by Joshua Griffith—and recognized local leaders like Kevin DeAcosta, Melanie Casciano and the Reading-Berks Association of REALTORS to support affordable housing for working families. - ➤ Alyssa Hoffman, a crossing guard at Spring Ridge Elementary in Spring Township, danced to celebrate International Dance Day and even helped a unicorn cross the street, delighting community members. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday, the state Department of Education announced that four Berks County schools and one college will receive $675,000 in grants to expand STEM and computer science skills in career and technical education — the funds will support new programs that help students prepare for high-demand jobs. - ➤ The Antietam School District finalized plans for the new Stony Creek Elementary School in Lower Alsace Twp after floods in July 2023. The district will soon start searching for a construction company to begin the project—expected to start late August to early September—with a budget of about $30 million and design changes to reduce flood damage.
