  • Safe Berks will host its 50th anniversary Celebration of Peace Gala Saturday at 6 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Reading, featuring live entertainment, food stations and raffles as it honors five decades of service and rallies community support for survivors.  Reading Eagle
  • The Central Berks Regional Police Department has begun offering stickers labeled (Occupant with Autism) during Autism Awareness Month so first responders can adjust communication with extra patience and simpler commands in emergencies.  WFMZ-TV
  • The Berks County Farm Bureau invites community members to a field-to-table dinner on May 31 at 4 p.m. at Jeremy Meck’s farm (1215 Route 419) in Marion Township, where a five-course meal and live music await; tickets cost $125 and support ag education programs.  Reading Eagle

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Reading family was displaced Monday after a fire extensively damaged their Hampden Heights home at the 1600 block of Palm Street — firefighters responded shortly before 3 p.m. and used extra crews to access upper floors while the American Red Cross and relatives provided emergency help.  Reading Eagle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • UGI is upgrading its natural gas system in western Berks County+ officials say the improvements will boost safety and reliability for local customers. The work is expected to start soon.  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Taco Fest in Reading is Saturday from noon to 6 p.m., the Junior League’s 19th annual Touch-a-Truck is Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium, and the Reading Theater Project debuts its play Banshee Friday at WCR Center for the Arts.  Reading Eagle
  • Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 will stop briefly at Reading Outer Station on Thursday, July 2 at 2:15 p.m. as part of a nationwide rail tour celebrating America’s 250th anniversary (it will depart at 3:00 p.m.).  Berks Weekly

ECONOMY NEWS

  • PA CareerLink held its spring job fair at FirstEnergy Stadium + it connected local job seekers with employers in Berks County.  WFMZ-TV
  • Gas prices rose by 92 cents from last year after oil prices increased Tuesday, affecting local pumps in Reading. Commuters should expect higher fill-up costs (check local stations for current rates).  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Diane Rudroe, a longtime educator at Conrad Weiser, retired after 44 years in 2019 but returned to teaching a full schedule via Zoom and in person, mentoring students in Latin, drama, and public speaking while also leading cultural trips (including European tours) for her classes.  Berks Weekly

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A plan to restore a century-old industrial building on South Sixth St into Cornerstone on 6th senior housing is proposed by HDC MidAtlantic and Landis Quality Living to create 46 apartments and 52 parking spaces. The Reading Planning Commission tabled the project pending a review letter from Berks County Planning Commission.  WFMZ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local sports action on April 27 saw Kutztown win a three to one volleyball match over Fleetwood and Exeter defeat Dallastown 13 to 6 in lacrosse. Softball and baseball contests saw winners including Twin Valley, Berks Catholic, and Wyomissing while Reading High fell short (recorded losses).  Reading Eagle
