COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Last week, United Way of Berks County celebrated its 100th anniversary at the DoubleTree by Hilton with nearly 400 guests and community leaders attending a birthday bash—campaign co-chairs Angel and Scott Helm were introduced and Richard Ehst received the Wilbur H.   • Downtown Reading will host the second annual Taco Fest on Saturday, May 3 from noon to 6 with live music, cultural dance performances, food from local vendors, free mechanical bull rides and ax throwing — the event will also kick off a free Cinco de Mayo 5K at 4 p.m. Additional local events such as art festivals, historical shows, wildflower walks and market fairs are planned throughout early May to engage the community.  Reading Eagle

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A deadly fire in a Robeson Township home on Monday morning (around 6:30 a.m.) killed two people and hurt three others (two firefighters were sent to the burn center at Lehigh Valley Hospital) as officials investigate the cause.  WFMZ-TV
  • On April 28th at about 6:20 a.m., firefighters removed three people from a burning home on the 600 block of White Bear Road in Robeson Township—crews evacuated the structure due to unsafe conditions as they worked to control the blaze.  Reading Eagle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Effective July 1, Colorado-based Oak View Group will manage the Reading Royals hockey team, Santander Arena and Santander Performing Arts Center in a new partnership with the Berks County Convention Center Authority. The company will upgrade concessions and retain most employees while handling daily operations, bookings and marketing—focusing on a premium fan experience—aimed at revitalizing downtown Reading.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Reading Public Museum will dedicate a time capsule and an Artemis 1 Moon Tree on May 1 at 3 p.m. at 500 Museum Road to mark the 100th anniversary of its historic building in the 18th Ward—recalling the cornerstone laid in 1925 and celebrating a century of educational service. The free event will add new items to mimic the original capsule and highlight the museum’s ongoing role in the community.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT officials are seeking comments on a $2.5 million plan to replace the aging T-Beam bridge on Penn Avenue over Cacoosing Creek in Sinking Spring. Bids will be invited next spring and construction will begin in phases in 2027—interested property owners and local businesses have until May 23 to review the plans and submit questions.  Reading Eagle
