EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carnegie recognized Alvernia University as a High Access, High Earnings Opportunity College in its new 2025 Student Access and Earnings Classification because of its strong health programs and local community ties. It is one of only 30 schools nationwide to earn both the Special Focus: Other Health Professions designation and a Carnegie Community Engagement Classification (showing its close links with local healthcare systems).  Alvernia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Exeter Township at 4375 Perkiomen Ave. and Cumru Township at 530 E. Lancaster Ave. will hold special Real ID events on April 28 and May 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. — these events help residents get a compliant state ID before the May 7 enforcement deadline that affects domestic flights and access to certain federal facilities.  Reading Eagle
  • Blue Marsh Lake will reduce services because a federal hiring freeze has stopped seasonal hires while permanent staff focus on dam operations for flood protection and emergency response. Visitors will face reduced hours at the Dry Brooks Day Use Area (8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the beach closing at 5 p.m. on May 4) and other changes like unreservable picnic pavilions and limited boat launches (effective May 17).  Reading Eagle
  • Kutz Mill Bridge in Greenwich Township reopened after repairs were completed this month following storm damage that caused a wall to collapse in March. The county spent about $109,000 on repairs—additional work planned in the coming months will require the bridge to close again.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Alvernia University received a gift from the Breidegam Family Foundation to transform the former American House at 354 Penn St. into a state-of-the-art community health center in downtown Reading that will serve underserved residents and provide clinical experiences for students + the project, costing $17 million, is part of the university’s effort to expand accessible healthcare and build future workforce skills.  Reading Eagle
