- ➤ The Giant Co. and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful launched a $100,000 Healing the Planet grant program to support native community plantings in 35 counties today; eligible organizations (nonprofits, schools and local governments) with shovel-ready projects must apply online by 4 p.m. May 21. - ➤ On Oct. 3 from 1-9 p.m., the Reading Public Library and Barrio Alegría will host Story Lane: Book Fair and Market in south Reading. The event will feature author panels, family crafts, live poetry readings, food trucks, and a night market that invites readers and writers to connect with local literature. Berks Weekly

- ➤ Pennsylvania American Water celebrated Earth Day yesterday by sharing water-saving tips like fixing leaks and turning off taps while brushing teeth to protect local water sources. The company encourages customers to use paperless billing to cut paper use. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ Nonprofit PennEnvironment and Berks County leaders toured Manatawny Creek Winery's rooftop solar array to review two decades of clean energy progress & learn about updated, cost-saving technology while State Sen. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Construction began last month on Egelman Dam upgrades that will lower its hazard classification, improve stormwater capacity, and restore the site as a community asset at Egelman Park. The work is set to reach substantial completion in June. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Route 724 in Robeson Township is closed as PennDOT replaces the deteriorating bridge over Allegheny Creek, prompting detours along Gibraltar Road, West 47th Street, Route 422, and Interstate 176 — which may add a few extra minutes. The new bridge project is expected to finish by Oct. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ State Rep. Manuel Guzman announced that $499,984 will fund EMPOWER Resilience, a new violence prevention initiative for youth 5-18 that will serve 1,000 at six Olivet Boys & Girls Club sites in high-risk neighborhoods; the program provides after-school & summer mentoring & supervision. - ➤ Wyomissing sophomore Parth Khachane won the BCIAA Flight 1 tennis title at Gov. Mifflin High School on Tuesday by defeating Wilson’s Ethan Mengel 6-2, 6-2 (he will defend his title Monday, May 4 at the Hershey Racquet Club). Reading Eagle
- ➤ On April 21, local schools competed in boys lacrosse, baseball and volleyball as Exeter edged Schuylkill Valley 10-4 in lacrosse, Berks Catholic, Twin Valley and Pottsville won their baseball games, and Daniel Boone, Exeter and Conrad Weiser secured volleyball victories. Reading Eagle
