CULTURE NEWS

  • Daniel Boone Homestead in Exeter Township will host Children's Day on May 4 from noon to 4 p.m. where families can enjoy colonial activities such as candle dipping, quill pen writing, and textile processing. Volunteers will lead tours of the Boone House and Bertolet Log House+admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $5 for youth with free entry for children 5 and under and DBHA members.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Congresswoman Chrissy Houlihan, State Senator Judy Schwank, and Reading School District Superintendent Jennifer Murray toured the new STEM school construction on North 9th Street where workers build a facility to ease overcrowding and improve learning for students. The district said some facilities will be finished by fall while the entire building will be ready by next fall — although federal funding cuts threaten progress.  WFMZ-TV
  • Master Gardeners told local residents that pachysandra may be suffering from winter dieback or Volutella blight — they advised cleaning tools with bleach, pruning damaged growth, and removing infected leaves. They also explained that eastern tent caterpillar webs protect larvae and suggested breaking the nests by hand to reduce defoliation.  Reading Eagle
  • Berks Catholic High School students returned from Easter break and entered the auditorium Tuesday morning to pray the Rosary for Pope Francis after learning of his passing in Rome last Monday at age 88. Many students recalled starting school when he began his tenure in 2013 — memories sparked by his images on classroom walls and life-sized cardboard cutouts.  Reading Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Reading will host Earth Day events on Saturday, April 26 at Reading City Park on North 11th and Washington Streets beginning at noon while volunteers join the Great American Clean Up from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. across the city. The festival will mark the 55th anniversary of the first Earth Day and the 35th for Reading and Berks County — featuring a ceremonial tree planting, battery and food collections and live music on two mobile stages.  WFMZ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT announced that over $1 billion will be invested in East Central Pa roads and bridges throughout 2025 — with Berks County set to receive more than $365 million for projects including a $134 million reconstruction of I-78 in Hamburg and a $9 million replacement of the Schuylkill Avenue Bridge in Reading.  WFMZ-TV
