CULTURE NEWS

  • Berks Bards and Berks Arts will host Beat Poetry Night on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Peanut Bar (a downtown landmark) to celebrate Poetry Month and Jazz Appreciation Month with beat poetry readings, a jazz trio, and an open mic.  Reading Eagle
  • Yocum Institute for Arts Education is presenting a musical adaptation of ‘The Secret Garden’ from May 8–17 at 3000 Penn Ave, West Lawn (featuring a community cast alongside current and former student performers). Tickets range from $10 to $25.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • AAUW Reading honored top senior girls from all 19 Berks County high schools with a monetary honorarium and announced scholarships for women pursuing higher education. Scholarship applications are due May 30 and winners plan to attend college in the fall + the awards celebrate local academic achievement.  Reading Eagle
  • Schuylkill County schools excelled in this year's What’s So Cool About Manufacturing contest when Lengel Middle (Pottsville) earned overall recognition and Blue Mountain Middle won Viewers Choice; a Best of PA event (May) will honor top state videos.  Reading Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Reading’s Earth Day celebration in City Park on Saturday, April 18 showcased environmental education and live performances for families. City officials highlighted renewable energy projects & community efforts to conserve natural resources.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture posted updated food inspection reports for Berks County restaurants from April 9 to 16, noting violations such as a buildup of old food residue under a chip display shelf at Reading Speedway, though all issues were corrected promptly+ ensuring ongoing food safety.  Berks Weekly

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Dave Mattes Team of RE/MAX earned the Certified Probate Specialist designation while keeping its SRES credentials. The dual certifications equip the team to guide families in managing inherited property sales and downsizing challenges (working closely with estate attorneys for smooth legal processes).  Reading Eagle
  • Realtors in Reading are marking Fair Housing Month in April by completing required anti-bias training to promote equal access to homeownership.
