COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lynnport Community Fire Co. No. 1 and Tripoli fire crews will host an all-you-can-eat breakfast fundraiser on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 7164 Behler Road (to benefit Walnuttown Fire and Rescue following the fatal crash that claimed its chief and assistant chief).  WFMZ-TV
  • Fleetwood Bank hosted its annual Agricultural Dinner at the Oley Fair Centre on March 25, bringing together more than 120 local agriculture professionals and six FFA chapters. Keynote speakers showed how farming supports the local community (and economy) in a vibrant tribute to the area’s agrarian roots.  Reading Eagle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Walmart announced it will remodel 32 Pennsylvania stores this year & plans to upgrade layouts, tech, and services; six stores in Berks and Montgomery counties are already underway or set to start this summer with work scheduled to last three to four months.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Renewed Spirit Church, at 449 N. Ninth St., Reading, will hold its annual German-language Maifest worship service on May 3 at 11 a.m. Rev. Rolf Schmidt will lead the service, broadcast live on WEEU-830 AM + feature music by the Reading Liederkranz Chorus and guest soloists.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Susan Looney, president of Reading Area Community College, was named the American Association of Community Colleges CEO of the Year on Tuesday at their annual convention in Seattle. She thanked the dedicated faculty and staff for their support.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT will begin replacing the Route 724 bridge (over Allegheny Creek) in Robeson Township this coming Monday, which will cause a temporary road closure.  WFMZ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, the Gift of Life Donor Dash begins at 11 a.m. at Brentwood Trailhead in Berks County and will end with a celebration at Trooper Thorn’s to promote organ donation awareness—participants can run, walk, or simply show support.  WFMZ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Reading’s Eric Martinez made his professional debut on April 3 in Allentown at Archer Music Venue, winning by TKO in the third round against Chris Karagiannis. The 20-year-old boxer (with over 100 amateur bouts) celebrated his long-anticipated victory and plans another fight soon.  Reading Eagle
  • Alvernia announced Jason O’Connell as its new head men’s basketball coach. The former Division III coach from Cairn University (Langhorne) will start his role in early May.  Reading Eagle
  • On Thursday, Twin Valley beat Wyomissing 16-10 in a game with 28 hits. Tyler Rhode doubled and drove in four runs while Billy Deveney had two doubles and three RBIs (the Raiders moved to 6-5, with Wyomissing now 6-6).  Reading Eagle
  • Del Bitting, a longtime driver at Reading Fairgrounds Speedway, was inducted into the Home of Champions in 2024 & now at 90 he spends his days sharing racing memories with family and fans in the community.  Berks Weekly
