  • Reading Public Library will host its 12th annual Celebrity Bartender fundraiser on May 20 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Saucony Creek Franklin Station (100 S. Seventh St.), where four local professionals will mix drinks to help raise $15,000 for free library programs.  Reading Eagle
  • The nonprofit American Hero Wishes in Berks County is hosting a letter drive named America 250: Honoring Our Heroes to collect 250 letters and 25 care packages for veterans. Residents are invited to mail their contributions by June 13 (PO Box 145, Birdsboro) to honor America’s 250th birthday.  Reading Eagle

  • UGI warns customers to beware of scammers posing as the utility company and demanding fees to start service. Officials advise calling the official number 800-276-2722 & securing accounts with a password to protect personal information.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State Berks created the Foster Excellence in STEM Fund after receiving a $1.25 million gift from alumna Melissa Daniels Foster (former ExxonMobil Chemical chief engineer) to support K-12 partnerships and on-campus programs that encourage future engineers and scientists.  Reading Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is spraying black flies along Manatawny Creek, Schuylkill River and Tulpehocken Creek before peak outdoor recreation begins. Helicopters and ground crews will use Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) to treat waterways during spring and early summer.  Reading Eagle
