COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Neighbors in West Reading will join a pedestrian safety audit led by Bowman Consulting to review issues like crosswalk timing and school zone flashers near the elementary center and along Penn Avenue, after 12 pedestrian accidents occurred in 2024 and 2025. A final report with recommendations is expected by June.  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Reading Theater Project presents a script-in-hand reading of Fourteen Votes by Susan Sneeringer at 1 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 18 at the Wyomissing Public Library - free admission with required reservations. The play examines voting and civic duty with local actors.  Berks Weekly
  • Record Store Day (April 18) will offer exclusive vinyl releases including rare editions by iconic bands like The Doors and Miles Davis. Local shop Vertigo Music in Reading is among those joining the event to provide limited edition records for collectors.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading & Northern Railroad will host Union Pacific’s Big Boy #4014 on summer excursions to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. Ticket sales start today at 9 a.m. for trips leaving Nesquehoning on June 13, 14, July 1 and a diesel round trip on July 2.  Reading Eagle
  • Daniel Boone Homestead is hosting A Revolutionary Children’s Day on Sunday, May 3 from noon to 4 p.m. in Exeter Township where children learn historic crafts like candle dipping and swordsmanship, visit General Washington (an interactive part of celebrating America’s 250th birthday), and tour historic buildings.  Reading Eagle
  • Genesius Theatre presents a world premiere adaptation of Peter Pan at its 153 N. 10th Street playhouse from today through April 18. Performances start at 7:30 p.m. on select evenings with 3:00 p.m. matinees offering a fresh retelling for families and kids.  Berks Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Peter Suppa, a building and trades instructor at Reading-Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center, won the 2026 Annie Sullivan Award during a ceremony Wednesday at Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences. He has built a half-day special education program for students with disabilities including autism and intellectual challenges.  Reading Eagle
  • Middle school students competed in the National Civics Bee on Thursday in Pottsville + they tested their knowledge and skills in civics.  WFMZ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Shapiro Administration announced over $10.2 million to buy rights that keep 31 farms from being developed; a 46-acre crop and livestock farm in Windsor Township owned by Barry C. and Donna E. Kline received $150,650 in funding ($26,960 from the state and $123,690 from the county) to remain used for farming.  Berks Weekly
