ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The NTSB released its final report on the March 24, 2023 explosion at the R.M. Palmer chocolate factory in West Reading that killed seven employees, injured ten and caused $42 million in damage—officials said that degraded pipeline components and delayed emergency actions were key factors.  WFMZ-TV
  • A homeowner jumped from a second-story window on Mill Street in Colebrookdale Township to escape a fire reported Monday night at 11:30 p.m.—firefighters from ten companies responded and took the person to the hospital while the Red Cross is helping the family find temporary shelter.  WFMZ-TV

  • The Gulati family has been renovating Reading Country Club in Exeter Township since buying it in December — the club will fully reopen to the public soon.  Reading Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • A man reportedly shot his wife and himself in their Temple home Tuesday afternoon—officials described the incident as an apparent murder-suicide.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Our City Reading, Inc. has partnered with Mayor Moran and city officials to redevelop the 120,000 sq ft building at the intersection of 5th and Penn in downtown Reading. The project will begin in 2026 and feature retail on the street level with office and residential spaces above—part of efforts to boost local economic growth.  Berks Weekly
  • Officials announced that Our City Reading Inc, Mayor Eddie Moran and city officials intend to redevelop the 450 Penn Street building—home to Santander since 2005—after its 20-year lease ends at the end of 2025. The redevelopment will add retail, office and residential spaces and work is expected to begin in 2026.  WFMZ-TV
  • An appellate court decided that emails and other written contacts between lawmakers and lobbyists will stay hidden from the public, letting the state continue to keep these communications private. Spotlight PA challenged the ruling but did not win (critics say this decision limits transparency in lawmaking).  WFMZ-TV
