  • Berks County Parks & Recreation will host a full slate of April events that include a wellness walk on April 5 at Angora Fruit Farm and a museum tour on April 3 at the Berks History Center—offering various nature, art and community activities—while some events require pre-registration and nominal fees.  Reading Eagle

  • Today, the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance—partnering with the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce—announced it is conducting a Wage & Policies Survey for Berks County businesses to gather local wage, benefits and policy data. CRIME NEWS

  • On March 31 at 1:02 a.m., officers responded to reports of shots fired at a residence on the 300 block of Elm Street in Reading where a man suffered a graze wound to his ear and declined treatment— the suspect was detained with charges pending.  Berks Weekly
  • Melvin Ojeda was sentenced to life in prison after he was found guilty of first-degree murder in February—he killed his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend on Valentine's Day.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Reading School District’s aquatics program has grown quickly under Assistant Athletic Director Matt Lubas with nearly 700 participants in swim lessons and group classes for both youth and adults at the high school pool. The district is recruiting more staff and offers a Lifeguard Prep Course until April 10 at RKAA City Line High School—providing students with hands-on training for lifeguard certification.  Berks Weekly

HEALTH NEWS

  • Berks County's child vaccination rates have dropped as state data shows a decline in several key vaccines—MMR rates fell from 96.9% to 95.1% while other immunizations also slipped over the past few years. Local health experts say delays following COVID-19 and rising parental exemptions have contributed to the trend, warning that lower rates can put children at risk.  Reading Eagle
