  • Heidelberg Family Restaurant (910 W. Penn Ave) will donate 50% of sales on Tuesday, April 7 to help a Wernersville family who lost their home in a fire. The fundraiser adds to local relief efforts with the American Red Cross and a GoFundMe set up to provide emergency support.  WFMZ-TV
  • Brandon George, a Kansas City Chiefs linebacker and Berks Catholic graduate, visited Reading Hospital today to spend time with families and kids in the pediatric unit + he aims to give back to the area where he grew up.  WFMZ-TV
  • Former Eagles cornerback Herm Edwards delivered a keynote speech at Monday’s Olivet Boys and Girls Club Leaders and Legends dinner at the DoubleTree Hotel in Reading — he met with children and stressed the value of mentorship.  WFMZ-TV
  • Stella Belinski, a 17-year-old from Shillington, interns at the O’Pake Institute at Reading’s CollegeTowne campus to study ways to boost community engagement & economic development in the area.  Berks Weekly
  • Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank added four new board members, including John Powers (President at Tobash Insurance) and Tim Santoro (Divisional VP at The GIANT Company) in late February; the nonprofit will unveil its new strategic plan in early summer.  Berks Weekly
  • Officials say Sinking Spring’s rebuilt community building in Heritage Park is nearing completion and is expected to open by the end of May—built on the foundation of the 19th-century freight depot, it will serve as a venue for small meetings and events with modern amenities and restored historic features.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Daniel Boone Homestead in Exeter Township will host Revolutionary Children’s Day on May 3 from noon to 4 p.m. for youth to learn period crafts — including candle dipping, butter making, and a visit with George Washington to mark America’s 250th birthday.  Reading Eagle
  • 16-year-old Alexander Shuman uncovered a collection of intricately carved marble relics while cleaning an overlooked church basement at the former First UCC on Reed and Washington streets. His father, Alan Shuman of Shuman Development Group, now plans to restore and display the pieces — a testament to Reading history.  Reading Eagle
  • Thorn Alley Kitchen will open April 10 at GoggleWorks, offering a menu of globally inspired comfort foods and craft beverages for guests. The restaurant—located on the arts center's ground floor—will complement creative events and provide both indoor and outdoor dining.  Reading Eagle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Workers installed key parts of a new transmission substation in Bern Township on Monday with the help of a helicopter. The project by FirstEnergy will improve power infrastructure to reduce outages and support local growth.  WFMZ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Animal Rescue League of Berks County and Wyomissing Borough will host a low-cost vaccine clinic for dogs and cats on Thursday, Apr. 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Wyomissing Fire Department (1259 Penn Ave); pet owners will access rabies shots, core vaccines, and microchipping services.  Berks Weekly

  • Penn State wrestlers Levi Haines and Josh Barr will lead the Bullet Mat Club wrestling clinic on June 6 at Brandywine Heights High School. Local kids can join sessions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (registration costs $25 for under-12 and $100 for older wrestlers).  Reading Eagle
