  • On Friday, Reading honored local hero Phyllis Long Green for her World War II service as a member of the only all-Black female unit to serve overseas. Today, community members gathered at her grave at Charles Evans Cemetery to lay wreaths while officials said the event is meant to inspire the next generation.  WFMZ-TV
  • Rep. Jamie Barton held a ceremony on March 27 to dedicate the State Street Bridge in Hamburg in honor of Vietnam War veteran Sgt. Jackie Seltzer—awarded Bronze and Silver Stars for his bravery. Area veterans, family and friends gathered at the event to ensure his legacy continues in the community.  Reading Eagle

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Thursday night, firefighters responded quickly to a fire on the 1300 block of Perkiomen Avenue in Reading where flames damaged two homes, smoke damaged a third, one firefighter was slightly injured, and one person was displaced—fire chief James Stoudt Jr. said hoarding conditions in the home of origin made fighting the blaze more difficult—and the cause remains under investigation.  WFMZ-TV

  • East Penn Manufacturing, a Berks company, was presented with the Corporation of the Year Award by America’s Blood Centers for its strong support of the nation’s blood supply. The award ceremony featured top representatives from America’s Blood Centers and Miller-Keystone Blood Center — a clear recognition of the company’s contributions.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tonight at 7 p.m. at GoggleWorks, the domestic violence documentary Finding Jenn's Voice marks its 10th anniversary by revisiting the 2011 murder of Jennifer Snyder after her boyfriend learned of her pregnancy. The film features survivor accounts — including one from Lisa Dowers — that highlight the need for better awareness and training on partner violence.  WFMZ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Reading Mayor Eddie Moran urged the council to reconsider its decision to deny $2.89 million HOME-ARP funding for an affordable housing project — speaking at 401 S. Fourth St. on March 27th — after Opportunity House proposed buying a 20-unit apartment building. Opportunity House executive director Modesto Fiume said council members who opposed the funding undermined the project and did not act transparently.  Reading Eagle
  • County officials from Dauphin, Lehigh, and Berks counties appealed on March 24 to state legislators for $6.3 million each to renovate the former youth detention center in Leesport as a new Regional Youth Detention Center. Officials said the center would provide 30 beds to ease shortages amid rising juvenile crime — a move aimed at enhancing public safety in the region.  WFMZ-TV
  • Officials from Berks, Lehigh and Dauphin visited the Capitol this week to ask state lawmakers for funds to open a regional youth detention center — they said reopening the Berks County Youth Detention Center is needed to detain juvenile offenders — and will monitor legislative responses closely.  Reading Eagle
