ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Tuesday marked three years since an explosion leveled building 2 at R.M. Palmer’s West Reading facility — which killed seven — and the event remains a somber milestone in the community.  WFMZ-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sam Sidhu, now CEO of Customers Bancorp, outlined a strategic vision to boost technology use and expand into new markets after taking over in January. He plans to drive growth in loans, deposits, and earnings with key leadership changes (including a new CFO and COO).  Reading Eagle
  • Spring Township officials will hold a public hearing on Apr. 27 — to discuss amending the development plan for a 3,379 sqft Raising Cane’s restaurant at Kohl’s parking lot. Approval would let the fast-food chain submit its final plan and bring its first location to Berks County.  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Thorn Alley Kitchen (at GoggleWorks Center for the Arts downtown) will open Friday, Apr. 10 and offer a globally inspired menu featuring Korean fried chicken served on a pedestal along with a full bar and morning café menu to blend art and food.  WFMZ-TV
  • Conrad Weiser Theatre Company will present Les Misérables: School Edition (a musical based on Victor Hugo’s classic) at the high school’s renovated auditorium from April 17 to 19. Advance tickets are $10, and a community outreach named Beyond the Barricade will share local resources during intermissions.  Berks Weekly
  • Educator Samantha Bremekamp moved to Berks County in 2023 and launched her TV show Sam’Splains the World to connect locals through field trips with artists and bakers. She now produces the WEEU Feedback Show with Toni Reese — airing weekdays from 10:00 to noon — and hosts a cooking segment.  Berks Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Berks Jazz Fest hosts its Get Jazzed program at the DoubleTree today, where skilled musicians (like saxophonist Eric Marienthal and Tulpehocken High School director Matthew Schrack) mentor student performers and encourage musical collaboration.  WFMZ-TV
  • Charlotte Thomas was named Twin Valley’s April Intern of the Month at Robeson Lutheran Preschool (supporting the three-year-old class). She plans to attend Kutztown University in the fall to major in elementary and special education.  Reading Eagle

  • Legislators are considering a bipartisan bill (which passed committee) that would require radon testing in schools and will soon be debated by the full house.  WFMZ-TV
  • Reading resident Noemi Gonzalez joined home care advocates in Harrisburg Tuesday to urge lawmakers to raise Medicaid reimbursement rates & secure wages for caregivers, following her struggle with paralysis and unstable care services. Her advocacy highlights a statewide crisis that leaves thousands of in-home care shifts unfilled each month.  Reading Eagle

  • Tuesday, the Reading Planning Commission approved revised plans for 601 Penn St. to convert the former Santander building into 177 apartments with 267 off-street parking spaces as part of a settlement with Dream Ventures PA II LLC (controlled by Heights Advisors); the board addressed previous zoning concerns.  WFMZ-TV

  • The Berks County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will induct seven new members at its 49th annual banquet on Sunday, Apr. 19 at Redner’s Event Center at FirstEnergy Stadium & honor five boys cross country teams and Baseballtown Charities Dream League with reservations open until Apr. 3.  Reading Eagle
