  • Hope House reopened in February after a six-month, $800,000 renovation at South Ninth Street to offer transitional housing for 13 men in recovery, where residents pay about $400 monthly for utilities and support services.  Reading Eagle
  • The Reading Public Library has repurposed an old card catalog into a Seed Library to lend categorized seeds for home gardens. Gardeners Yamileishka Rodriguez and Yahaira Ortiz selected seeds today as part of a program designed to help fill local food gaps (with support from Berks Nature and community donations).  Reading Eagle

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A dog was rescued from a two-alarm house fire in Robeson Township today, and investigators are looking into the cause of the blaze.  WFMZ-TV

  • Safe Berks named Eniyah Cooper and interim director Erica Caceres to boost donor outreach for survivors, while Alvernia University's Rodney Ridley was honored for his local impact, and Fulton Financial Corp. will promote Karen Grafje after Bernadette Taylor retires on June 5.  Reading Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Baseless Trio, a high school group without a bassist, received a $750 Chuck Loeb Ensemble Scholarship on Thursday and will play at Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest. The group includes pianist Gabe Perry, guitarist Aiden Wilson and drummer Dexter Sales, honored by RMF and Berks Arts.  Reading Eagle
  • The Reading Railroad Heritage Museum in Hamburg is hosting 'Remembering the Reading Railroad'—an exhibit with illustrations, panels, and photos through Oct. 25. The museum welcomes visitors on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Reading School District has approved 38 reading specialist positions; 19 are filled and 19 will be advertised with hiring to start next school year. The district’s needs-based approach uses enrollment and performance data (targeting early readers) to ensure every student gets proper literacy support.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents and local officials in Upper Bern Township voiced concerns on Sunday, Mar. 22 that a proposed detention facility in a 527,000 sqft warehouse on Mountain Road may strain water, sewer, road systems, and tax revenue (up to $828,000 annually).
