COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity dedicated a renovated rowhome at 924 Douglass St. to first-time owner Guadelupe after she completed 200 hours of sweat equity with help from students, volunteers and community partners. Local leaders and partners celebrated this milestone as it set a new example for affordable housing in Reading.  Reading Eagle
  • Crews are still repairing storm damage after strong winds knocked power out and downed trees near Albright College and in Douglassville. About 1,300 Met-Ed customers remain without power while backup generators provide relief (including free meals and games for students).  WFMZ-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Swing Evolutions in Exeter Township expands into a new space to add an 18-hole mini golf course with natural layout, digital scorecards and a live leaderboard. Owner Charlie Bross welcomes reservations + plans tournaments including a national hybrid tournament in April, with the grand opening on Saturday at 8 a.m.  WFMZ-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • The funeral for fallen State Police Corporal Timothy O’Connor, killed in the line of duty, is today at St. Joseph’s Church in Downingtown — the service will honor his sacrifice as family and friends gather.  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Berks Sinfonietta will debut at Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest with pianist Lars Potteiger at the Miller Center for the Arts on March 28 at 6 p.m. The show opens with the Berks High School All-Star Jazz Band (blending classical and jazz sounds in a Gershwin program).  Reading Eagle
  • Reading Public Museum returned a 10th- or 11th-century Khmer sculpture after staff flagged it as looted, coordinating with Cambodia's Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts (affirming their ethical commitment) to restore the artifact to its rightful home.  WFMZ-TV
  • The Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University will host a free Easter on the Farm event on Saturday, March 28, featuring Pennsylvania German folklife demonstrations, live music, kids’ activities, crafts, and Easter egg hunts (12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.).  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kutztown University will receive $40,000 and Alvernia University will get $30,490 from the Pennsylvania Department of Education through the It’s On Us program to fund campus initiatives that educate students about consent and offer survivor resources.  Reading Eagle

  • Schuylkill Valley’s senior swimmer Owen Eisenhofer was named the BCIAA boys swimmer of the year after winning the 200-yard freestyle in record time and the 100 backstroke at a state meet held at (Bucknell University). He also helped his team secure relay victories.  Reading Eagle
