  • Judy Ellsworth, a longtime local volunteer, organizes the annual Book Bonanza at Mohnton’s Berks County South Campus office building, where volunteers collect, sort, and offer donated books for affordable prices. CULTURE NEWS

  • Pianist Emmet Cohen and his quintet will honor Miles Davis and John Coltrane on March 22 at 3 p.m. at the Miller Center for the Arts during Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest in Reading — the tribute unites timeless jazz with emerging local talent.  Reading Eagle
  • Businesses along Penn Avenue hosted a Friday scavenger hunt themed Pot of Gold Hunt in West Reading and are hosting a bar crawl today organized by the West Reading Community Revitalization Foundation. Tomorrow, a chili cook-off will let visitors sample local recipes and vote for the best chili.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Reading School District plans to replace 25 diesel buses with electric vehicles via a partnership with Zum Services, marking the first such transition in Berks County; charging station construction starts in spring and buses are expected for the 2026-27 school year + the project is supported by an $8.985 million federal grant.  Reading Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On March 9, birdwatchers observed thousands of snow geese at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area in Kleinfeltersville (a reservoir built to attract waterfowl) as the birds formed a raucous display before continuing their annual northward migration to Arctic breeding grounds.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PPL Electric Utilities submitted a petition to the PUC for a base distribution rate increase to fund system upgrades (including stronger poles and smart grid improvements) and help vulnerable customers; if approved, new rates will go into effect July 1.  WFMZ-TV
  • Safe Berks received $100,000 in state grant funding to improve sidewalk repairs and safety upgrades at its shelter – announced Friday by State Rep. Manuel Guzman Jr. – to better serve survivors in the community.  Berks Weekly
  • Nonprofit and faith-based organizations in Berks County are receiving state funding as part of a nearly $11 million statewide investment to enhance security at houses of worship and community centers. The grants support safety planning, equipment upgrades, and training to help keep community gathering places secure.  Berks Weekly

HEALTH NEWS

  • On March 6, Friends of Reading Hospital and the Reading Hospital Foundation hosted a Farm to Table celebration at the DoubleTree by Hilton that raised $150,000 for the hospital’s NICU. The event blended farm-fresh cuisine & artistic displays to support the neonatal intensive care unit.  Reading Eagle
