COMMUNITY NEWS

  • IM ABLE Foundation will host its BASH Fundraiser at Alvernia Plex on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. to raise funds for adaptive equipment and boost confidence among people with disabilities in Berks County.  WFMZ-TV
  • Renovations at the Olivet Boys & Girls Club on Mulberry and Walnut streets began Friday, March 6 with a $1 million federal grant and state funds — the upgrades will expand programs to serve nearly 1,000 youth when reopened in the fall.  Reading Eagle
  • Berks Book Bonanza collects donations of gently-used books, DVDs, puzzles, and games at the rear entrance of Berks County South Campus in Mohnton until Saturday, June 13; drop-offs are accepted Mondays and Tuesdays 9:00 a.m. – Noon, Wednesdays 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., and select Saturdays.  Berks Weekly
  • George March, a former guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, spoke at Reading Regional Airport this morning to local veterans — sharing his experience from President Kennedy’s tribute in the early '60s and recounting the history of military interments.  WFMZ-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Reading Regional Airport in Bern Township will soon break ground on two new hangars to ease limited space as Gaming Leisure Properties Inc builds one hangar and NetJets opens a maintenance facility, adding job opportunities for local workers & supporting more customers.  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Reading Symphony Orchestra announced its 2026–2027 concert season featuring works by Rachmaninoff, Mahler, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. The program will partner with dancers + students and local organizations to showcase community talent and share world-class music.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Reading School District has approved a switch to 25 new electric buses to start in the 2026-2027 school year — construction will begin this spring to install charging stations funded by an $8.985 million grant from federal sources that will reduce emissions and lower maintenance costs.  Berks Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Berks County Commissioners heard a report from the Convention Center Authority that highlighted Santander Arena's 25th anniversary and record-breaking attendance of over 363,000 at 177 events + strong local revenues last season. The report noted fewer scheduled events and lower hockey game attendance in 2026 while outlining planned renovations for nearby venues.  WFMZ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Friends of Reading Hospital and Reading Hospital Foundation raised over $150K at Farm to Table(aux) on March 6 at the DoubleTree by Hilton to support the Level III NICU — a boost for vulnerable newborn care — where more than 300 guests enjoyed farm-fresh cuisine and art.  Berks Weekly

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Greater Berks Development Fund sold 24 acres on Van Reed Road in Bern Township to C&B Development. The firm plans to start building a 221,000 sqft industrial building in spring — a project that will support growth in the area.  Berks Weekly

  • On Wednesday, Wilson’s Kai Boyer won the state championship in the 100-yard butterfly at Bucknell University (his teammate Evelyn Quick finished second in the girls event).  Reading Eagle
