COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Reading Public Library revived its historic card catalog by turning it into a free seed library that offers native, vegetable, and flower seeds arranged alphabetically for anyone to try gardening with a pot and some sunshine — a welcomed resource already drawing local interest.  WFMZ-TV
  • De Mujer a Mujer, a program of the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance, is asking community members to nominate local Latina women for its 7th annual awards — honoring community impact, young changemaker and small business owner achievements — with winners announced at a June 11 event. Nominations must be submitted online by Friday, May 1.  Reading Eagle
  • New Journey Community Outreach held its fourth annual Coldest Night walk/run at Penn State Berks in Spring Township on Feb. 28. About 250 participants walked to raise funds and awareness for local homeless services, with proceeds supporting expanded critical programs in Reading.  Reading Eagle
  • Karin Mallett hosted the Berks County Heroes Breakfast this morning at the DoubleTree Hotel — the American Red Cross honored local lifesavers and volunteers who give their time to help others. Peter Brown said the event aims to inspire community members to learn CPR and install working smoke alarms.  WFMZ-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Before 6:30 a.m., firefighters including Chief Gullo, Sgt. Rhoads, and others rushed to a burning home on White Bear Road in Robeson Township, rescuing occupants amid fierce flames — three fatalities occurred and two firefighters required ventilator treatment for smoke inhalation.  WFMZ-TV

  • Jeff Krick will present a gospel concert on March 15 at 3 p.m. at Zion’s Lutheran Church in Perry Township (free admission with a free will offering).  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Reading Science Center received a $142K grant from the Neag Foundation to renovate its exhibit and classroom space and launch a free after-school program (645 Penn St.) that will extend STEM opportunities for over 6,000 children annually across Berks County.  Reading Eagle
  • Students in grades 6 to 12 from Reading can enter an essay contest by Friends of Hopewell Furnace and the National Park Service on how Declaration of Independence may shape the future. Entries are due April 5; winners earn cash prizes and share work at Hopewell Furnace on July 4.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents are urged to change smoke alarm batteries as clocks move forward this weekend. State Fire Commissioner Tom Cook stresses that proper testing and maintenance of alarms can reduce home fire risks (free alarms are available from Ready PA for qualifying households).  Berks Weekly
  • City officials held a CRIZ Launch & Learn event today at the John R. Post Center at Alvernia College Towne to explain how state tax credits can support redevelopment and boost economic growth. Mayor Moran said the program will help attract new investment and promote housing and business growth.  Reading Eagle

  • Reading High’s Esmeralda Tellez and Berks Catholic’s freshman Kimberly Munoz secured state medals after winning their quarterfinal matches in the PIAA Girls Wrestling Championships in Hershey on Friday — both will compete in the semifinals today at 7 p.m.  Reading Eagle
  • Berks Catholic’s Layden Acevedo advanced to the semifinals today at the Giant Center in Hershey after beating Clearfield’s Colton Ryan 4-2, and he will face Bishop McCort’s Melvin Miller tonight at 7 p.m.  Reading Eagle
