COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Animal Rescue League of Berks County will host its annual Pet Portrait FUNraiser on June 20 at Alvernia University’s Miller Art Gallery. Local artists will paint pet portraits that community members can vote on to help fund the shelter's care for rescue animals.  WFMZ-TV
  • Reading Public Library revived its old card catalog by converting it into a seed library that gives free native plant, vegetable, and flower seeds. The project, partnered with local master gardeners, supports urban gardening efforts in Reading — it does not require a library card.  WFMZ-TV
  • Michael Weil (a veteran who overcame hardship and homelessness) is honored as an American Red Cross Hero for supporting fellow veterans at the Stand Down event in Pottstown every fourth Saturday.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Reading Science Center received a $142,000 grant from the Neag Foundation to expand science learning. The center will renovate exhibit and classroom spaces, launch a free after-school program, and reduce school visit costs for more than 6,000 children across Berks County.  Berks Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials say the Hudson Tunnel project—resumed about a week ago—has raised hopes for a new passenger rail service that will connect Reading to Philadelphia as discussions with Amtrak and Norfolk Southern continue.  WFMZ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sarah Sommer joined the Oberkotter Foundation's Board of Trustees on March 1 to help improve care for children with hearing loss. The digital marketing leader and Geisinger vice president brings more than 20 years of experience to lead new online strategies.  WFMZ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Reading High’s Esmeralda Tellez advanced to the quarterfinals at the PIAA Wrestling Championships in Hershey after winning her first round on Thursday. Four Berks wrestlers continue competing at 11:45 p.m. Friday.  Reading Eagle
  • Three local Berks wrestlers won their first-round matches at the PIAA Championships in Hershey today and advanced to quarterfinals set for 8 a.m., with Layden Acevedo, Chase Homan, and Tyden Shuman leading the pack.  Reading Eagle
  • Wilson’s McKaden Speece broke the Berks County record on Thursday at the Giant Center in Hershey by earning his 195th win at 172 pounds in the PIAA Class 3A Wrestling Championships. He is three wins from his first state title (the former record was held by Colin Shober).  Reading Eagle
