COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Reading’s Clean City team is planning the Great American Cleanup and Earth Day celebration on April 18 in City Park. The city will expand its Adopt-a-Block program to help keep neighborhoods clean year-round.  Reading Eagle
  • The Youth Canstructure Contest returns on Saturday, March 14 in Berks County — youth teams will build canned food structures to support the Helping Harvest Food Bank and receive mentoring at a Penn State open house on Friday, Feb. 20.  Berks Weekly
  • Berks County will kick off its 275th anniversary celebration on Wed, Mar. 11 at Reading Area Community College’s Miller Center. The event begins with a reception from 5 to 6 p.m. and a formal program from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. that highlights the county’s past and future.  Berks Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Emerging Entrepreneurs Academy is rebranding as the Emerging Entrepreneurs Leadership Academy and expanding its six-week program to offer high school students real world business experience through classes and internships. Upcoming plans include quarterly alumni events and expansion into Lancaster County.  Reading Eagle
  • Alvernia University theatre professor Nathan Thomas received the Innovative Teaching Award at the American College Theatre Festival in Columbia, Maryland for his creative approach to teaching acting and developing a fresh curriculum. His work emphasizes hands-on learning and student engagement.  Alvernia University
  • Reading Area Community College has named Mike Simmons as a new member of its 15-member board of trustees. He serves as director of community engagement for Penske Transportation Solutions and will help guide the college's future decisions.  Reading Eagle
  • Gov. Josh Shapiro presented his 2026-27 budget proposal today that boosts state funding for Berks schools by $41 million — with over half allocated to the Reading School District. Increases also include over $35 million for Ready to Learn Block Grants and smaller boosts for basic and special education funding.  Reading Eagle
  • Hawk Mountain Sanctuary will offer its 2026 Summer Nature Camps for children in grades 1 to 5, with eight themed weeklong sessions beginning June 15 and running Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (fees are $325 per week or $275 for members; scholarships are available).  Reading Eagle
  • Alvernia University theatre professor Nathan Thomas was honored with the Innovative Teaching Award at the American College Theatre Festival Region 2 ceremony in Columbia, Maryland, for his creative teaching methods — from teaching in tents during the pandemic to staging acts in local comedy clubs — that inspire hands-on learning.  Berks Weekly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Natural Lands purchased 59.7 acres in Union Township and transferred it to the Bureau of Forestry to protect critical wildlife habitat and add to the adjacent William Penn State Forest for recreation. The land split by Mullen Hollow Road near Robeson Township will allow hiking, bird-watching and more.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Reading Police Academy, commissioned 50 years ago, is training a full class of 42 cadets at Alvernia University this year. Thirteen cadets will join the local police while 27 begin careers in surrounding towns (highlighting its regional reach).  Reading Eagle
  • Reading Fire Chief James Stoudt—who joined the department in 1993 and became chief in 2022—is retiring after three decades of service and will work part-time at the Berks County Fire Training Center before traveling more, with his service being honored Monday at City Council meeting.  WFMZ-TV
  • PennDOT license centers will be closed Feb. 14 – 16 for Presidents Day while customers can still access driver and vehicle services online through its website.  Reading Eagle

    Good Thyme For Life is an annual dining event in Berks County for Co-County Wellness Services, raising money for their mission of public health.
