- ➤ Reading Hospital invites community members to volunteer for the No One Dies Alone program to keep hospice patients company during their final moments — volunteers must be 18 and pass a background check, with shifts from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Berks Weekly
- ➤ Berks Women2Women announced the 2026 ATHENA Leadership Award will go to Trish Shermot and the EmpowHER Award to student leader Nehal Trivedi; awards will be handed out at the Conference & Expo on Wednesday, Mar. 4 at The Plex at Alvernia University. Berks Weekly
- ➤ A Berks County motorcycle shop served Redner’s chili Saturday to help warm up residents and support homeless shelters — the event provided a community boost amid ongoing cold weather. WFMZ-TV

- ➤ The Reading Symphony Orchestra will present a Valentine’s concert on Saturday, Feb. 14 at Santander Performing Arts Center where music director Andrew Constantine arranged Puccini and Tchaikovsky’s most romantic pieces. Noted performers Toni Marie Palmertree and Charles Reid will sing arias + duets amid a special evening of love music. Reading Eagle
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Hawk Mountain Sanctuary will host 2026 summer nature camps for kids in grades 1–5, offering weeklong learning, hiking and field trips during sessions from June 15 through Aug. 7. The camp will operate Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with discounted rates for members and available scholarships. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Fourth graders from Brecknock Elementary earned first place at the PA Invention Convention with their Terra-Dri-Vator Pro that tills, dries, and preps soil on Feb. 4 in Hershey; they will compete nationally in Dearborn starting June 3 and meet with Caterpillar representatives later this month. - ➤ Bird watchers recorded 244 species in Berks County in 2025—eight fewer than the 25-year average. They spotted five white pelicans and several unusual gulls at Blue Marsh Lake and Lake Ontelaunee, spurring local birding efforts. Reading Eagle
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Reading Police Academy marks 50 years since state commissioning with a new class of 42 cadets, 13 of whom were hired by the city while 27 start careers in nearby areas. The program has expanded partnerships with Alvernia University & Kutztown University to boost training for law enforcement today. Berks Weekly
- ➤ Route 143 will be closed on Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for bridge demolition as part of the I-78 Lenhartsville Bridge Replacement Project. Drivers must follow detour routes via I-78, with a ten mile detour (weather permitting). Berks Weekly
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Berks County food safety inspections from Jan. 21 to Feb. 3 found several vendors with violations, including slime on an ice machine at Talk’s Tavern and improperly stored food at Heritage Of Green Hills (issues have been corrected where noted). - ➤ Hamburg Area School District's athletic director Aaron Menapace will be named Pennsylvania Athletic Director of the Year at Hershey Lodge on Thursday, Mar. 19. He becomes the second from Berks County to earn the honor and looks forward to new athletic projects. Reading Eagle

Good Thyme For Life is an annual dining event in Berks County for Co-County Wellness Services, raising money for their mission of public health. This year’s event runs from March 2nd-8th and features 7 local restaurants each night, generously donating a portion of the evening revenue to support our work in education and advocacy.
