COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Commute PA is launching an initiative this February to encourage non-drive-alone trips that cut costs and reduce car wear while giving travelers a chance to win one of four $100 Tango gift cards. Participants who log at least four trips via the website or app will be entered into the raffle.  Reading Eagle
  • Berks County kicked off its 250th-anniversary celebration Friday, Feb. 6 at the Berks County Services Center in downtown Reading. The America250PA event gathered county commissioners, state officials & local leaders to honor America's founding and spotlight the county's unique history.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alvernia University was named a 2025-26 Business College of Distinction by Colleges of Distinction for its hands-on business curriculum and ethical leadership focus. The honor highlights the school’s commitment to prepare students for careers in fields such as accounting and marketing.  Alvernia University
  • Penn State Berks will host a dancer send-off from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19 at Perkins Student Center Lion’s Den as three dancers prepare for THON—a 46-hour dance marathon supporting families with cancer. They will join events at Bryce Jordan Center from Feb. 20 to Feb. 22.  Berks Weekly
  • Fourth graders at Brecknock Elementary won first place at the PA Invention Convention on Wednesday in Hershey with their project, the Terra-Dri-Vator Pro (a device that tills, dries, and removes water vapor from soil). They will next compete nationally in Dearborn in June.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading Science Center will upgrade its classroom and lunchroom spaces using a $67,500 Neighborhood Assistance Program award to add technology, new furnishings, and staff for expanded field trips and programs.   • Desiree Reasoner was named vice president of Student Affairs at Kutztown University on Tuesday after 26 years of service; she will oversee Residence Life, Housing and Dining Services and other student services (public safety, health and the Dean of Students office) to support campus success.  Berks Weekly
  • Reading Area Community College was awarded $3.6 million from the Pennsylvania Department of Education to improve campus facilities by expanding its student union (receiving $2.1 million) and upgrading its HVAC system (with $1.5 million).  Reading Eagle

  • A water main break has closed Route 61 on Pottsville Pike between Tuckerton Road and Reading Crest Avenue in Muhlenberg Township. Motorists should use alternate routes & follow local updates on road conditions.  WFMZ-TV
